Diabetes: a campaign to raise awareness about visual health

Comments Off on Diabetes: a campaign to raise awareness about visual health

Diabetic retinopathy is a major complication of diabetes, affecting 6 out of 10 diabetic patients after 10 years of disease progression. It is the leading cause of blindness in industrialized countries, before age 601. It is therefore essential to remember the importance of regular screening after 10 years of diabetes (and even before). The awareness campaign "In the eye of diabetes" initiated by Bayer a year ago, seems to bear fruit and returns to your screens.

Diabetic retinopathy is a major complication of diabetes. Slow and insidious, this disease is actually the leading cause of blindness in industrialized countries in the under-60s. After 10 years of diabetes, 6 out of 10 patients will have retinopathy. And yet, a simple photographic examination of the fundus of the eye, performed at least every two years, can detect this complication.

The challenge of the vast campaign initiated by Bayer and called "In the eye of diabetes", is precisely to raise the awareness of the greatest number of people to this risk. For Luc Licari, Associate Director of Retina France, "the entire information system has enabled many families to open their eyes to the visual problem of diabetes. Indeed, few people know that diabetes is one of the leading causes of blindness in Europe, and that its prevalence is very important. Many do not know that there is a control to be done.

New TV spots

Following the first wave of the television campaign, 78% of diabetic patients surveyed, having seen the spot, say they want to do a fundus examination. Of these, 15% have already done so. So much evidence of the positive impact of this campaign.
