Fabric softeners already have a long life behind them. That's how it came to the market 40 years ago. Since then, they have announced to make the laundry soft and fragrant – but with expensive "side effects".
However, as a recent show of the SWR program "Marktcheck" shows, there is also content on which they do not advertise – and for good reason.
Animal tallow is the main ingredient
The softening effect is due to cationic surfactants. "These are sometimes also produced from animal fat, that is slaughterhouse waste," says Philip Heldt, North Rhine-Westphalia Consumer Center Environment Specialist. -Westphalia, during an interview with the SWR. For example, animal dung such as tallow is the main component of a water softener.
The fabric softener triggers allergies and irritates the skin
In addition, the ingredients are not only disgusting, but sometimes debatable. As toxicologist Marike Kokossa points out in an interview with the SWR: "These are primarily allergenic substances that are used either as a perfume or as a preservative." This could lead to contact dermatitis, allergies and skin irritation.
In addition, Lilial fragrance, which is not only in tissue conditioning agents, but also often in shower gels, laundry, soaps and hand creams, could possibly affect fertility.
In addition, they provide a foul odor in the washing machine. Fabric softeners are increasingly used to minimize emerging odors. The residues are often left in the pipes.
The result is not new. Already in 2003, the Ökotest judged the softener in a negative way. In the meantime, 16 years have passed since the test.
It would also be beneficial for the environment not to use fabric softener.
If you do not want to do without soft clothes, hang it on the outside or use a tumble dryer.
