Mikrodermabrasion: it's so good

As for the latest beauty treatments, I'm a real caterpillar – who likes to swap her old skin for a new one. All the procedures that have nothing to do with syringes, poison or knives make me directly curious. That's why I am curious to know what microdermabrasion will bring to the dermatologist.

Treatments at a glance: These treatments are currently the best

Microdermabrasion: what is it?

"Microdermabrasion gently removes the superficial layer of skin with a single device," says Dr. med. Elisabeth Schuhmacher. "On the handpiece is an abrasive particle of sand, with diamonds or a sponge, which removes the skin manually." At the same time, depending on the device and the method, the detached skin cells are sucked gently and become strong and are evacuated through a hose during treatment.

These three types of (micro) dermabrasion treatments are available:

  • Microdermabrasion with sand: In the case of microdermabrasion with abrasive particles, a high vacuum is created simultaneously by suction: the dead skin is removed directly and the skin is abundantly supplied with blood.
  • Diamond microdermabrasion: The head of the tool is made of small diamonds, which remove the epidermis in an intense and gentle way. It is then cleaned manually to remove loose scales that have not been removed during suction (depends on the device, if the suction is direct).
  • Microdermabrasion with water: A gentle alternative in which a water jet that strikes the skin, including a sanding sponge, removes skin cells with extreme softness. This creates only a slight suction effect, the remaining scales must be removed manually.

Who is microdermabrasion for?

"In general, individual procedures are suitable for all types of skin and almost all skin conditions," says Dr. med. Shoemaker. "However, you must refrain from using inflammatory acne, extremely sensitive skin and low collagen content, otherwise the bacteria will spread on the face or it could cause irritation, otherwise the method does not present that benefits – to eliminate scars from pigmentation disorders – without risks and downtime ".

This helps the microdermabrasion:

  • to fold
  • impurities
  • Big pores
  • pigmentary disorders
  • stretch Marks
  • Non-inflammatory acne
  • grain

How exactly does microdermabrasion work? The test

Arrive in practice, the medical beautician Vanessa Reminder first analyzes my skin. As the temperature is warm and the sun is high, it is advisable to use a gentle method of microdermabrasion – a microdermabrasion in the water, so that the sun does not irritate thereafter.

First, the skin expert gently cleans my skin to remove dirt and bacteria. In the second step, she wears a scrub. For me, she chooses an enzyme scrub that gently loosens the superficial layer of skin with papaya enzymes. Depending on the type of skin, it is also possible to work with a more intense peel with fruit acid, which acts a little more effectively against wrinkles, enlarged pores or impurities. But they should not be used in summer, because they make the skin more sensitive to light.

After neutralizing toner, the microdermabrasion treatment is then performed. The handpiece with the friction sponge applicator and the water jet guide the beautician on my face in circular movements and stroking. From the test, a light stream of water gently removes the epidermis (upper layers of the skin) – a totally pleasant feeling, no trace of pain. Even more, it feels like a pleasant massage and wet.

Once the top layer of the skin has been removed, the skin can be very well cleaned manually. Vanessa Reminder therefore removes small impurities and poplars from my face, then disinfects them without alcohol, so that the skin is not irritated after microdermabrasion. The same goes for care: the active ingredients against impurities or anti-aging serums containing vitamins can also penetrate much better into the cells of the skin. I get a moisturizing and soothing serum for the skin and a fleece mask with green tea. Finally, Vanessa Reminder wears sunscreen, which is very important.

What should be considered after treatment?

"If the treatment is finished, avoid the sun and the solarium," said Dr. Elisabeth Schuhmacher follows. "Anyone going to the sun anyway should use a sun protection factor of 50 for three days and protect the skin with a hat." It is also advisable: "About 72 hours after treatment, no hard drugs such as acids and only mild detergents without alcohol consumption, so you are on the side of safety."

Microdermabrasion: before-after – the result

Immediately after treatment, my skin is very soft. I have the impression that she has absorbed the skincare substances altogether. The skin cells are well moistened and the cleaned areas are barely visible with the exception of a few small rashes. The advantage of microdermabrasion: The beautician had to exert much less pressure when cleaning. My advice: combine a cleaning procedure with a microdermabrasion to clean the skin permanently and gently remove pimples and blackheads.

Microdermabrasion: how often?

In the professional, the treatment should be left about every four weeks, which also corresponds to the skin renewal cycle of about 28 days. With significant keratinization of the skin, treatments make sense even every two weeks. Who peels at home, the device can use about once a week, but should pay attention to certain things.

Microdermabrasion at home: you have to know that

From brands like Philips or PMD, there are now Mikrodermabrasions devices for the home. They work on the same principle, but they can not suck so much. To avoid skin damage you should always clean the Mikrodermabrasion device very carefully, otherwise the bacteria may spread on the skin. It is also important to work only when the pressure is low, otherwise the deeper layers of the skin could be damaged.

Microdermabrasion: that's the cost

In the practice of Dr. med. Elisabeth Schuhmachers costs around 140 euros for face and neck microdermabrasion. If the neckline comes with, it costs around 180 euros per session, including tips, cleaning and professional care. You can also combine them with other anti-aging treatments. Microdermabrasion devices for the home are available from 90 euros.
