Kidney weakness causes many comorbidities

About six million Germans are affected by kidney failure. In many cases this is diagnosed late because a decreasing function of the organ often causes no discomfort long. At an advanced stage, however, the situation is different: kidney failure can lead to many serious side effects, including heart attacks, strokes and a weakened heart. Health experts warn patients with kidney failure of the incomparably high number of possible sequelae.

It remains rare in the kidney

Experts from the German Society of Internal Medicine (DGIM) report on the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of kidney failure. The kidneys regulate the balance of salts in the body, intervene in the formation of blood and contribute to energy metabolism, bone and protein. If the functionality of the kidneys is disrupted, it will affect the whole body.
Treating kidney weakness is not an easy task because virtually no other disease has the potential to cause so many serious side effects. According to the DGIM team, the highest risk is the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure, cardiac arrhythmia, heart attack or stroke. Edema, ie water retention, can also occur, especially in the legs or lungs. In addition, disorders of the nervous system and bone metabolism are possible, which greatly increases the risk of bone fracture. Overall, it can also be said that people with kidney failure age faster in many ways.

Disease with devastating consequences

A recent study of 2.6 million health insureds found that peroxene with kidney problems topped the list with the overall complexity of the disease. The data from the analysis showed that patients with kidneys developed an average of 4.2 other diseases and took 14.2 different drugs. With an annual mortality rate of 6.6%, these individuals also had the highest risk of requiring care in one year alone. The figures confirm that nephrology patients rank first out of four out of nine complexity markers, placing them at the top of the overall complexity.
Since the effects of kidney failure on other organs are so versatile, the person should always be the subject of holistic monitoring and medical management. In particular, potential drug interactions play an important role here – logically, since 90% of the ingredients are eliminated by the kidney. The intense complexity of kidney weakness also requires the cooperation of different medical services. Internal medicine must form a unit whose different departments are closely linked. Specialization is required, but it is with the help of a holistically trained internist that the overview of the disease as a whole is kept.
