What helps against acne in adults?

Blackheads, redness and purulent pustules – even people over 30 may develop late acne. Why is he born and what really helps.

The pimples and inflammations on the face, décolleté and back can be painful. Most often, they form in adolescents when their hormonal balance changes during puberty. But even adults can have acne or get treated.

What is acne?

Acne is a skin condition that produces too much sebum and corneal matter. This mixture accumulates in the pores and causes comedones: the open comedones are blackish and whitish. Bacteria, especially the bacteria of acne Propionibacterium acnes, multiply. In turn, the pores react with inflammation, redness, swelling, pustules and nodules. These can continue to ignite. The skin wets and releases pus.

Incidentally, pus is formed when white blood cells (leucocytes) attempt to kill bacterial invaders. Pus is a mixture of disintegrated tissues, bodily fluids and dead white blood cells.

Causes of acne

In most cases, skin defects are attributed to genetic causes and an imbalance in hormonal balance. This is especially evident in puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Then, male hormones take over and stimulate the sebaceous glands so that they produce an increased amount of cutaneous fat – that is why acne mainly affects young men.

Causes of late acne

Even those who have not had any blemishes in their youth can contract acne in adulthood. Late acne especially affects women: about 30% of people over the age of 30 have the dreaded pimples, say dermatologists. The reason is usually a change in hormonal balance, for example after stopping the pill, after childbirth or during menopause.

In addition to hormonal causes, stress also plays an important role in late acne. Those who also suffer from lack of sleep, smoke, drink a lot of alcohol and often eat fatty foods, put extra pressure on the skin. Doctors report that an improvement in the appearance of the skin can be seen if those concerned avoid these stimulants for a long time. More rarely, sunlight, drugs, cosmetics and intolerances are causing acne in adults.

Where does Spätakne come from?

The acne of puberty is manifested primarily on the forehead, nose and ears, dermatologists talk about T-shape. Unlike late acne: "late acne" is distributed U-shaped on the face. The pimples and inflammation form on the cheeks and chin, and the neck can also be affected.

Late acrobat and psyche

In most cases, the symptoms are not as pronounced in adults as in young people. However, sufferers suffer greatly: in young people, skin and pimples are considered normal – in the elderly, they are more likely to be perceived as imperfections.

Acne treatment

The most important thing in acne: do not scratch and do not express pimples! It makes things worse. Anyway, the skin is irritated – what she needs now is care and the right treatment.

In order to correctly treat the impurities, the triggers must be discovered in the first step. With strong acne can be countered with hormonal preparations. In case of allergy, it is generally better to dispense with critical substances. If the drugs are the trigger, another medicine may help.

Toners and lotions

In addition to these factors, proper skin care is the alpha and omega in the fight against pimples. The goal is to reduce the production of sebum, open pores and contain bacteria. For this, dermatologists have at their disposal a range of cleaning products, toners and special lotions.

In severe cases, systemic therapy may be necessary. This means that the drugs are taken orally, usually in tablet form. These are mainly antibiotics, hormonal preparations or retinoids.

Treatment of late acne

It is important not to dry or unnecessarily irritate the skin in case of acne, as it will harden even more and produce more sebum. Therefore, care products must be adapted to the needs of mature skin. Experts say that acne remedies for puberty are too aggressive for skin over 30 years old. In addition, people should be cautious with a washcloth or towel: too much scratching will hit the skin and may cause minor injury.

Special care for late acne

Depending on the severity, different therapies are available. The doctor distinguishes whether remedies should be directed against inflammation, sebaceous glands clogged or significant development of sebum. Benzoyl peroxide, which is directed against bacteria, is often helpful. Sometimes antibiotics are also prescribed. Retinoids reduce blackheads, azelaic acid has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, it also helps fight against keratinization of the sebaceous glands. Alpha-hydroxy acids in turn open the pores.

In general, sufferers should use products labeled "no comedogen": they do not explicitly cause pimples. The fewer emulsifiers and preservatives, the better. Amino acids containing zinc, silica or medicinal yeasts are also good for the skin because they inhibit the growth of various germs.

Not recommended for acne

Taboo is all that can clog your pores. Therefore, doctors advise against impurities from oils, including herbal oils. Cocoa butter, as well as oily creams, petrolatum and others are not suitable skincare products. It clogs pores and allows bacteria to continue to grow beneath the fat layer.

It also needs to refrain from soap because it attacks the acid mantle of the skin and thus promotes the formation of bacteria and blackheads. For sensitive skin with impurities and tonic with alcohol is not suitable. Only with oily skin with many inflammations, an alcoholic toner can sometimes help.

Avoid home remedies

If you use makeup, you must make sure that it is made with water rather than oil. Home remedies like toothpaste, vinegar or baking soda are not suitable. They only bring unnecessary irritation. Instead of doing your own experiments, the best recommendation is to consult a dermatologist.

Acne scars

The most important goal in acne is that there is no scarring. That's why good treatment is recommended from the start. If there are scars, there are now special scrubs, collagen injections or corticosteroids that only a doctor can apply. Depressed scars can also be lifted. Sometimes laser therapy makes sense.

Those with acne scars can consult a medical specialist: some dermatologists are not only specialized in treating the disease itself, but also in the treatment of scars.
